The Rose: Flashback to Patch and Kayla.
Steve "Patch" Johnson and Kayla Brady were what one could call star-crossed lovers, at least for awhile. He pushed her away when he had troubling memories of his past; he pushed her even further away when his brother Jack developed feelings for her. Jack and Kayla even got married. After Kayla finally married Steve, his first wife showed up, the one he thought was dead. They got that settled, they had a baby daughter and just when it looked as if they were destined for happiness, Steve died. In Kayla's arms.
Despite having a brief relationship with Shane, Kayla never really got over Steve. He was the love of her life and no one else would ever measure up. She missed him so much, in fact, that she couldn't even go back to Salem, not even to visit her family. It was just too painful. The memories of Steve were everywhere. Now Jennifer and Frankie are getting married and the draw is just too strong.
