AUSTIN REED
(Austin Peck)
Austin Reed is the son of Kate Roberts and Curtis Reed, her deadbeat ex-husband. When he first came to Salem, he had no idea that Kate was his mother. He moved into the apartment across from Carrie's. He was a boxer and also played the piano at Wings. Eventually he and Carrie started seeing one other, but Austin's boxing career caused problems. He was mixed up with a bad crowd who ordered him to throw fights.
In 1993 Carrie was nominated and won Bella Magazine's "Face of the 90s" contest. At the party that was thrown for her, she was hit in the face with acid by a man who was aiming for Austin, after he refused to throw a fight. Roman planned to arrest Austin for his part in an illegal gambling ring, but Carrie stopped him by promising her father that she would no longer see Austin.
Jennifer Devereaux gave Austin a job co-hosting her talk show and Austin had a crush on her for awhile. Austin donated bone marrow when Jennifer's daughter Abby needed a transplant to control her aplastic anemia. He helped Jennifer learn about the company that had dumped toxic waste near their home years before.
Curtis Reed came to Salem in 1993. Curtis had gotten Austin's sister Billie addicted to drugs when she was younger and also raped her. Curtis drugged Billie and intended to rape her again, but before he could he was murdered. Billie, who couldn't remember what had happened, was arrested for her father's murder. Billie's prints were on the gun that was used to kill Curtis and part of her wondered if she had done the deed.
Billie and Austin were both shocked when the fact that Kate was married to Curtis Reed came out. Eventually Billie admitted that Curtis was her father and that he had sexually molested her. In the end, it was revealed that Stefano DiMera killed Curtis in self defense and framed Billie. She was released. Billie and Austin were reunited with Kate, the mother they thought abandoned them. Kate told them that Curtis had taken them from her and she believed they had all been killed in a car crash.
When Lucas and Sami made love in the Titan building, Austin saw them but assumed it was Carrie when he saw her shirt on the floor. Later, Sami drugged Austin and tricked him into sleeping with her by pretended to be Carrie. The next morning, Austin told Sami he had made a mistake and they could not be a couple. Sami ran away. Carrie learned that Austin had slept with someone else, she just didn't know who. Austin and Carrie were apart because they each suspected the other of being unfaithful.
Carrie and Austin searched LA for Sami, but couldn't find her. The two made up and soon became lovers again. Though Austin wanted to tell Carrie who he slept with, she didn't want to know. They became engaged and prepared to be married. As the wedding began, Sami returned and fainted. She murmured about her "baby" and revealed to everyone that she was pregnant. A stunned Austin told Carrie that he could be the father because Sami was the woman he slept with. Carrie slapped Austin and the rest of the Brady clan spurned him for what he had done to poor Sami. Austin stayed with Sami through her pregnancy and the birth of "their" son, William Reed.
Austin and Carrie still had feelings for one another and they agreed to meet up on the roof of their apartment building at the stroke of midnight one night. They decided that if one of them didn't show, it meant they were over. Sami changed the time on Austin's watch so he went to the roof at the wrong time. As a result, both Austin and Carrie thought the other had given up.
Sami drugged Carrie's Champagne and carried her to bed. Lucas showed up drunk and when he passed out, Sami put him in bed with Carrie, then she arranged for Austin to see them together. The next morning both Carrie and Lucas were clueless as to how they ended up in bed together. Austin gave Carrie the cold shoulder and told her that he saw her and Lucas. Carrie couldn't explain what had happened. Thinking it was over between her and Austin, Carrie began dating Lucas.
Kate finally got the truth out of Nurse Lynn Burke and Jaime Caldwell. They broke and told her about all of Sami and Lucas's schemes to break up Carrie and Austin. Kate exposed Lucas and Sami. Carrie decked Sami, then she and Austin reunited and went to Green Mountain Lodge for a few days. Upon returning, Austin and Carrie sued Sami for custody of Will but lost.
Kate gave Austin and Carrie a surprise engagement party and a pre-wedding trip to Paris. Back in Salem, Will was kidnapped by Mary, Sami's next-door neighbor. In Paris, Austin and Carrie end up in a room right next to Mary. They decided to get married there, but their plans screeched to a halt when they learned about Will's kidnapping. Sami arrived and they all searched for Mary. When she was found, Will had already been sold. Luckily, the couple was apprehended before they could flee the country with Will. French child protective services refused to turn Will over to an unmarried couple, so Austin and Sami were forced to marry in order to get him back.
Upon returning to Salem, Austin filed for divorce and Sami fought back. She followed him and Carrie up to Green Mountain Lodge. Carrie caught Sami in their room, wearing her negligee. A huge fight followed and Sami pressed charges against Carrie, who was arrested. Sami put a restraining order on Carrie, forcing her to keep 100 feet away from her and Will.
Austin and Carrie had planned a romantic getaway, but Sami learned about their trip and stole his car and crashed it. She tried to tell Austin that something was wrong with his car, but he didn't believe her. In the parking garage, she begged him not to drive it. He ignored her and tried to drive away, but the car's gears slipped and Austin backed into Sami. She was rushed to the hospital and fell into a deep coma.
While she was in the hospital, Austin played the video tape of his wedding to Sami, hoping the music would help her. When the music seemed to have an effect on her, Marlena urged Austin to tell Sami that he loved her. When Sami finally awoke, she had amnesia and was paralyzed from the waist down. She soon remembered her wedding to Austin and believed they were happily married. Unfortunately for Carrie and Austin, Mickey told Austin he could not legally divorce Sami when she was not in her right mind. Much to Carrie's dismay, Austin had to play the loving husband to Sami.
Sami moved in with Austin and he slept on the couch, telling her that he was a restless sleeper and didn't want to make her uncomfortable. Sami began to recall bits and pieces of her past, but kept silent upon Lucas's urging. Sami also convinced Austin to sleep in the same bed with her, but he snuck out of the bed after she fell asleep and snuck back in before she woke up.
An electric shock jogged Sami's memory and also gave her back the use of her legs. She still believed that Austin really loved her and wanted to tell him the truth, but Lucas convinced her otherwise and came up with the idea to convince Austin that Carrie was falling in love with Mike Horton. He thought that once Austin gave up on Carrie, he could easily steal her from Mike. Once Austin was free, Sami could have him. Sami and Lucas arranged for Mike to go to Green Mountain Lodge where Carrie was waiting for Austin. When Austin finally showed up he saw Mike and Carrie in a hot tub and thought that he was losing his beloved.
After finding a discrepancy in Will's birth records, Sami realized that Lucas was his real father. She broke into the hospital to attempt to change Will's blood type, but was confronted by Austin, Carrie, and Mike. They were stunned to see Sami walking. Upon learning that her father, Roman Brady, wasn't dead, Sami used him to stir up more trouble for Austin and Carrie. She had recently learned that Austin had filed for an annulment. Sami went to see Roman and told him that she was very happy with Austin and that Carrie was in love with Mike Horton. Carrie didn't want to upset her father and played along, unaware that Austin was outside Roman's room and heard her say that Mike made her happy.
Austin eventually came clean with Sami about the annulment and what she had done in the past. Sami begged Austin not to leave her, and to force his hand she moved into the Kiriakis Mansion. Austin began feeling guilty about Sami and eventually proposed when he thought that Carrie was in love with Mike. Sami called Carrie in LA to gloat about her engagement to Austin. Carrie and Mike returned to Salem on Austin and Sami's wedding day.
Carrie showed up, determined to stop the wedding. Roman pretended to collapse to buy Carrie time to learn what was really going on. Carrie, Eric and Mike searched the hospital records and learned that Lucas was really Will's father. Carrie rushed to the church and decked her sister and then exposed the devastating truth. Much to Sami's dismay, Austin married Carrie instead of her.
Carrie and Austin decided to spend their honeymoon in Rome and kept it a secret from everyone but Kate. They feared that Sami would learn where they were and would cause trouble. She did. Sami convinced Mike to let her be his personal assistant and when he was invited to a medical conference in Rome, she accepted on his behalf and even booked a room for him, and herself, in the same hotel as Austin and Carrie.
Mike arrived in Rome for the medical conference and ran into an old colleague he knew from Israel, Dr. Debra Thomas. Mike and Debra decided to go to a street carnival that night and ran into Austin and Carrie. Carrie ran up and kissed Mike, who was wearing the same mask as Austin.
Back in Salem, Sami and Franco joined forces to make Austin jealous. Franco realized that Austin had been spending a lot of time at the punching bag at the gym and Sami told Franco that Austin used to be a boxer, but quit because Carrie hated it. Franco told Sami that this was the perfect way to cause trouble for Austin and Carrie. They arranged for Austin's old boxing coach to come pay him some visits and try to lure him back to the old gym.
Sami told Austin that Lucas was becoming a drunk and she was afraid for Will. Carrie accused Sami of trying to cause trouble, but Sami said she was over Austin and was in love with Franco now.
Austin was growing irritated with the amount of time that Carrie was spending working at the hospital on Mike Horton's Chief of Staff campaign. Austin was lured back to his old gym by his former trainer and began boxing and helping other younger boxers train.
The Horton's and Brady's hosted a Fourth of July barbecue during which the hospital's board members appointed Mike the new Chief of Staff. Austin thought that his wife's work with Mike Horton had ended, but Mike offered Carrie the job as the hospitals' PR person. She wanted to ask Austin first and Mike understood. However, Carrie never found the perfect time to tell Austin, who had become wrapped up with Sami and Lucas. Sami was still claiming that Lucas was a drunk. Sami saw the perfect moment to cause trouble when Lucas, who had been drinking, dropped Will. She rushed Will to the hospital and asked Austin to meet her there. At the hospital, Sami accused Lucas of hitting Will. When the story spread, Carrie took the PR job to keep it quiet. Carrie eventually told Austin about the job, which he accepted. During Lucas's trial for child abuse, Austin defended Sami, while Carrie defended Lucas.
On Sami and Franco's wedding day, Lucas killed the groom. When Sami walked in and saw Franco dead, she fainted. A fast-thinking Kate wiped Lucas's prints off the gun and placed it in Sami's hand. Sami, who was unable to remember what happened the night Franco was killed, was charged with murder and was sentenced to death. She persuaded Austin and Carrie to act as Will's guardian. She escaped prison and fled town with Austin, the only person who truly believed in her innocence. They "kidnapped" Will and found shelter with an eccentric woman named Tracey. Eventually, Sami turned herself in and her execution was scheduled. As the last drug begins to drip into her veins, Lucas stormed through the doors and confessed to the murder.
After sharing a passionate kiss, Carrie and Mike decided they should end their relationship. Feeling that he and Carrie had no future together, Mike slept with Nurse Ali McIntyre. In bed, Mike jokingly made pillow talk about Ali's attributes as future Head Nurse. Mike and Ali saw each other on a social basis, but she got possessive so he broke it off.
Feeling neglected by Austin (who was on the run with Sami), Carrie turned to Mike. At the urging of the duplicitous Craig and Nancy, a jealous Ali followed Carrie and Mike to Las Vegas, where she was horrified to see them growing closer. She took pictures of the couple together and e-mailed them to Austin. A troubled Austin walked in on Carrie and Mike in bed. He punched Mike and told Carrie their marriage was over. Later, Ali cried "Sexual Harassment," and Mike's job as Chief-of-Staff was in jeopardy. To Mike's horror, Ali won a three million dollar settlement.
Austin divorced Carrie and she and Mike left Salem together. With Carrie gone, Austin was free to be with Sami, but he disapproved of her typically underhanded tactics to get custody of her son.
Austin began to spend more time with Princess Greta and she invited him to accompany her to Europe in order to claim her title and fortune. They walked through a magical doorway and fell into a "Virtual Eden." In this wonderland, they were forced to pass a series of tests to prove their virtue so that Greta could be crowned princess. Together they fought serpents, quicksand, hallucinations and even an "evil Sami." Although they emerged victorious, Austin was forced to face with one final challenge before they were freed -- a fight to the death with three gladiators!
Austin and Greta were released from "Virtual Eden" and returned to Paris to plan for her coronation. Guests flew in from across the globe and took their places in the lavishly decorated ballroom. The regal ceremony began but gunshots ripped through the ballroom. Greta underwent emergency surgery, and Sami donated her blood in an effort to win back Austin's affection. Princess Greta eventually recovered from her wounds but lost Austin (to Sami) in the process. Sami's dreams came true one evening when Austin dropped to one knee and proposed (after asking Will's permission)! Austin agreed to marry Sami immediately, in Las Vegas. While there, Sami and Lucas fought and Austin overheard a startling confession: Sami said she lied about Lucas hitting Will. Austin told Sami he could never marry her. After sharing a kiss with Nicole, Austin left Salem for good.
Now, Austin is back. He returned for Sami and Lucas's failed wedding and provided her a shoulder to cry on, not to mention some tough love. He decided to stay in Salem and start his own business and was thrilled when his true love Carrie returned to town, as well. Things were looking up for the two of them, that is until he completed a hostile takeover of her company. Will she ever be able to forgive him?
