JENNIFER DEVERAUX
(Melissa Reeves)
Born in a farmhouse during a snowstorm, Jennifer is the daughter of Drs. Bill and Laura Horton and the younger sister of Mike Horton, also a doctor. When Laura was institutionalized, Bill placed Jennifer in the care of grandparents Tom and Alice Horton. After a brief period as rebellious teen, Jennifer got her act together, began studying journalism in college and was hired as a newspaper intern by Diana Colville Jennifer found her true calling - and her first husband, Jack Deveraux - at The Salem Spectator. Although there previously had been men in her life, including Frankie Brady and Emilio Ramirez, none stirred her passion like Jack. Theirs was a difficult courtship and marriage. Jennifer tried to stand by her man, but Jack made that impossible. So when suave, smooth-talking Peter Blake entered the picture and promised to take care of her and daughter Abby, Jennifer fell prey to his charms. Despite her mother's warnings, Jennifer married Peter (Stefano DiMera's adopted son) on the rebound. But those who marry in haste repent in leisure, as Jennifer soon found out. After believing for some time that Peter had died, she began to have doubts and eventually found out that he was alive. Peter was determined to kidnap Jennifer and Abby and take them to a remote island. Aware of this, Jennifer, with the help of her first husband, Jack, forced Peter out of hiding and Jack and Jennifer were eventually reunited with their family. Wanting to start a new life, Jack, Jennifer and Abby left Salem for Africa. Jennifer Horton has recently returned to Salem along with her daughter Abby via Ireland. To start a new life, Jack, Jennifer and Abby left Salem for Africa. Jack followed her back to Salem, and he and Jennifer tried to reconnect as a family by moving into a house with Abby. Jennifer tried to pull out of the arrangement, but Jack threatened to sue for sole custody of Abby if she left. Jack tried desperately to win back Jennifer's affection, but she was preoccupied with feelings for a man from her past (Colin, Grandpa Shawn's nephew). Jack threw a surprise birthday party for Jennifer and asked for her hand in marriage; Jennifer declined. Drunk and depressed, Jack kissed Greta in an attempt to make Jennifer jealous. The plan backfired and Jennifer went on a date with Brandon! Jennifer and Colin were stunned when they finally met face-to-face. After sorting out her emotions, Jennifer decided to follow her heart and looked forward to reconnecting with Colin; however, she soon discovered that Colin was engaged to another woman, Elizabeth. She decided to continue her relationship with Brandon, even going with him to Sami's incomplete wedding ceremony in Las Vegas. There, Jack's plan to both win her back and get an impressive job backfired. She got the job he was after -- editor-in-chief of the Salem Spectator -- and she kicked him out of the house. She decided to continue her relationship with Brandon, even going with him to Sami's incomplete wedding ceremony in Las Vegas. Back in Salem, however, things with Brandon didn't continue as planned. They went on a weekend getaway, but Colin and Nicole followed them. Jack and Sami tried to follow, as well, but were sidetracked at a murder mystery bed and breakfast. Jennifer and Brandon had to cut short their romantic escapade to rescue them and, shortly thereafter, cut off the romance completely. Jennifer started seeing Colin, who was no longer engaged and swore it was over with Nicole. She swears she's only seeing him to find out his involvement with the DiMeras, but it seems that something more is going on. In fact, it seems like she still has a thing for Jack, given her jealous reaction to him dating Billie. While Jennifer grew more involved with Colin, Hope was kidnapped. Jennifer was part of the whole plot to rescue Hope, but Jack wasn't. He swore he'd never forgive her for misleading him and allowing him to print lies about the story in the Spectator. Jennifer continued to plot to get Colin, until she uncovered his ties to the DiMera organization. She and Jack worked together to bring him down and, ultimately, she was forced to sleep with Colin to save Jack. Later that same night, Colin was murdered and Jack and Jennifer each thought the other had committed the crime. It turned out they were both innocent. Their relationship progressed until Jennifer proposed to Jack! Jack and Jennifer were remarried in a beautiful ceremony that included their daughter Abby and was broadcast live on their talk show, In the House. They returned to their honeymoon to continue working on the show for a bit, but Jack was dissatisfied. He wanted to return to his roots as an investigative reporter and unfortunately, this led to his murder by the Salem Stalker. Jennifer had to make the heart-wrenching decision to take Jack off of life support, only to have Abby then blame her for his death. Shortly thereafter, Jennifer found out she was pregnant and considered this a last gift from Jack. Unfortunately, the pregnancy was a dangerous one; the baby's life, as well as Jennifer's, was in danger. Backing out of her driveway one evening, Jennifer accidentally ran into a mysterious man, Patrick. He was apparently new to Salem and penniless; she invited him to live in the guesthouse over the garage. It turned out he was Bonnie Lockhart's son. He proved a lifesaver more than once, using a strange pirate doubloon he carried to help Jennifer come out of premature labor. It turned out that Jack was not dead; along with all of the other victims of the Salem Stalker, he was being held hostage in an exact replica of Salem, but on a tropical island. Jennifer, of course, found it impossible to give up on her husband. When she began receiving mysterious messages from "Jack," she became convinced her husband was still alive. Despite her difficult pregnancy, she agreed to go on a plane with a suspicious pilot to meet him. The plane crashed on an island where, eventually, she did meet up with Jack! Unfortunately, she and Jack were separated again as they tried to make their way through the jungle to "New Salem." She went into labor and delivered a healthy baby boy, with the help of Patrick Lockhart, in a cave. Then, she very nearly died; Tony DiMera saved her life through his knowledge of the local plants. She was finally brought back to "New Salem," and eventually Jack was found and the two reunited and bonded with their baby son.
The next plan was escape. More Salemites arrived on the island and together they sought a way off. Despite Tony's volcanic eruption, they crammed on to makeshift rafts and took off! Unfortunately, that eruption caused a giant wave that tossed the rafts around like matchsticks. The Coast Guard rescued most of the Salemites, but Jack was swept away and presumed dead. Of course, he was really recaptured by Tony and carried off to a remote European castle.
With Jack "dead," Jennifer was left to raise an increasingly rebellious Abby and Jack Jr. by herself. And to think about moving on with Patrick Lockhart.
