LUCAS ROBERTS
(Bryan Dattilo)
Lucas Roberts came to Salem from military school. Upon arrival, he befriended Sami Brady and the two began to plot. Sami wanted Austin, who was in love with her sister Carrie, and Lucas wanted Carrie, who was in love with Austin. Lucas told Sami that if she lost some weight she might get Austin to notice her, so Sami went on a crash diet. Meanwhile, Lucas managed to convince Carrie to have plastic surgery on her scar so she could be Bella's Face of the 90s. Later, Lucas learned that his father was Bill Horton and that Austin and Billie Reed were his siblings. When Lucas' friend from school Alan came to town, he raped Sami. Lucas helped Carrie try and trap Alan, but their plan failed and Carrie and Sami were both taken hostage. After Alan went to jail, Sami was teased by men and feared that nobody would ever love her. Lucas was also depressed about the fact that Carrie made it clear that they could only be friends. Both seeking comfort, they made love. Later, Sami drugged Austin and tricked him into sleeping with her by pretending to be Carrie. The next morning, Austin told Sami he made a mistake and they could not be a couple, so she ran away. Carrie learned that Austin had slept with someone else, but she didn't know who. Austin and Carrie were apart because they both suspected the other of being unfaithful. After Lucas' mother Kate was apparently killed in a plane crash, he learned that Vivian had something to do with it and he blackmailed her into finding Sami and bringing her home in time to stop Austin and Carrie's wedding. Sami returned and revealed that she was pregnant with Austin's child. After Will was born, Lucas asked Sami if there was any way that the baby could be his. Sami said no. On New Years Eve, Sami drugged Carrie's glass of champagne and carried her to bed. Lucas showed up drunk and when he passed out, Sami put him in bed with Carrie. Sami then arranged for Austin to see them in bed together. The next morning Carrie and Lucas were clueless as to how they ended up in bed. Austin gave Carrie the cold shoulder and told her that he saw her and Lucas in bed together. Carrie couldn't explain what had happened. Thinking it was over between her and Austin, Carrie began dating Lucas. Eventually, Kate learned everything Sami had done to break Austin and Carrie up and she exposed both Lucas and Sami. Carrie and Austin were reunited. When Austin accidentally backed his car into Sami, she fell into a deep coma. When she finally woke back up, she had amnesia and couldn't recall the last four years. Lucas decided to use the situation to his own advantage and convinced Sami that she and Austin lived together. He told her to go home to Austin and surprise him. When she did, she found a woman's negligee and lipstick in the apartment and thought Austin was cheating on her. She accused Carrie of stealing her husband. Austin and Carrie convinced Sami that he wasn't cheating on her. Sami moved in with Austin. Eventually, she began to recall her past, but kept silent when Lucas urged her not to tell Austin. She believed Austin really loved her and wanted to tell him the truth, but Lucas convinced her otherwise. He got Sami to help him with a new plot, that of convincing Austin that Carrie was falling in love with Mike Horton. Lucas thought that once Austin gave up on Carrie, he could easily steal her from Mike. Once Austin was free, Sami was planning to steal him from Carrie. Eventually, the truth came out. Will was not Austin's son, but Lucas'. Austin and Carrie were married and Lucas finally realized that Carrie and Austin did belong together. Sami, however, was hurt and bent on getting revenge. Lucas learned that Sami was blackmailing his mother, but Kate refused to tell him what Sami had on her. Lucas and Sami began to get on one another's nerves and both plotted to get rid of the other. Sami caused trouble by telling Austin that Lucas drank too much and Austin began checking in on his brother. Sami found Lucas passed out on the floor with Will missing. Desperate, Sami called Austin. They found Will and Lucas insisted he wasn't drunk, he had just fallen asleep. Sami declared that Lucas had hit Will. They went to court and Sami got custody of their son. When Lucas was caught in an unsupervised visit with Will, Sami got a restraining order against him, swearing he'd never see his son again. After Sami and Franco became engaged, Lucas refused to let Franco become Will's stepfather. He wouldn't have to worry about that too long. Franco was murdered and Sami was charged with the crime, although Lucas had actually done the deed. Sami was tried and almost put to death, but Lucas, after having a fit of conscious, ran in at the last moment and stopped the execution. Lucas fell in love with Nicole but, unfortunately, she was in love with Eric, Sami's twin brother. Lucas made all kinds of promises to her, but it was Kate who got Nicole for her son, with a check for $5,000,000. Nicole and Lucas were married and he got custody of Will. After Sami was released from prison, she fought to get custody of Will, even moving into the Kiriakis Mansion so she could be near him. Eventually, Sami worked with Nicole to get Will back, by driving Lucas, a recovering alcoholic, to drink again. Nicole got Lucas drunk and seduced him and made him think he had beaten her and confessed to Franco's murder. Lucas, along with Kate and Victor, followed Sami and Brandon to Italy where they had gone to try to get information about Franco's murder. They tried to get Sami to return to Salem before she got the information, but to no avail. Back in Salem, Nicole finally told Lucas that she married him only for money. They were divorced. Still in Europe, Kate set up a hit on Victor and thought he'd been killed. Unfortunately, Sami got her hands on the tape of Kate bribing Roberto to confess to Franco's murder. Kate was confident, though, that since she now had all of Victor's money, Sami would still lose Will. But, Kate was wrong and, after the tape was played, Sami took Will. Later, Kate discovered that Victor was still very much alive and in cahoots with Nicole. She knocked him out and set the house on fire, but the only one injured in the blaze was Lucas. He was in a coma and was sent away to a rehab center. Eventually, Lucas came out of his coma and was able to come back to Salem, but he was still partially paralyzed. Sami taunted him, while Lucas seemed to really want to make amends. He went with his mother to Sami and Austin's wedding in Vegas, where the real Lucas came out when he tape-recorded Sami's confession of many of her evil deeds. Austin overheard and left Sami at the altar, and Lucas returned to Salem with evidence of Sami's misbehavior. Eventually, with Victor's help, Lucas used the tape to get joint custody of Will, who he took with him for a summer in Africa. When they returned, Will had learned a lot of bad habits from Lucas! Lucas continued to work on Victor's side, helping him to make Sami's life miserable. Even when it was discovered that he was still married to Nicole - the divorce papers were never filed - he worked hard to make it right. Lucas went from being strongly on Victor's side to working for his nemesis, Tony DiMera. He enjoyed his newfound position of power - a lot - but the stress drove him back to drinking. But was it the stress of the job or over his unrequited feelings for Sami. His AA sponsor, Maggie, thought it was the latter and told Lucas he would feel compelled to drink until he was truthful. He managed to control the drinking, especially after Sami was injured at the DiMera Mansion and very nearly died. While she was in the hospital recovering, Lucas has some very erotic fantasies about her. He continued to help Sami adjust after she got out of the hospital. Lucas, as well as his mother, was one of the main suspects when the Salem Stalker started a murder spree. The Stalker murdered several of Lucas's Horton relatives before she was finally caught and her identity revealed. Marlena was the murderer!
This was of course devastating news for Sami. She and Lucas grew closer as he tried to help her through this difficult time, until they finally made love. They managed to get past their pasts and develop a relationship. Lucas proposed to Sami, but with a caveat; she had to promise to redeem herself and to never lie to him again. She wasn't sure she wanted to accept; she wanted a better proposal, which Lucas came through with in a big way. He asked Julie for her advice and wowed Sami with a song.
Sami and Lucas became engaged but Kate did everything in her power to make sure they never walked down the aisle. She even brought Sami's ex Brandon Walker back to town. With Kate's help, "fate" intervened. Lucas found Sami and Brandon in bed together on the morning of the wedding. He was devastated. As much as he loved Sami, he couldn't forgive her for this. He ripped up the marriage license and swore he never wanted anything else to do with her. Sami tried to convince him that Kate was responsible, but his mother smooth-talked him and he only blamed his ex-fiance.
Even Will wanted nothing to do with Sami. He moved in with Lucas, then Sami appeared to disappear. In reality, she was getting revenge on all of her enemies in the guise of "Stan."
When Shawn, Rex and Brady came to Lucas with a plan to rescue his brother Philip, he was at first very reluctant. Eventually, they talked him into it and he headed behind enemy lines on the daring rescue attempt. Despite being almost killed, they made it out alive, but all the Salemite men were surprised – to say the least – to find Sami there. Lucas was thrilled that she was the one to help rescue them. Eventually, after their return to Salem, Lucas and Sami reconnected and planned another wedding.
Unfortunately, this one wasn't to be, either. Kate would see to that. Lucas and Sami made it all the way to the altar, despite a terrorist threat, when "Stan" suddenly appeared at the end of the aisle. Sami knew this couldn't be. It was Kate, of course, who learned the truth thanks to Nicole and Tony. She disguised herself to expose Sami. Lucas dropped her, for good this time.
Lucky for Lucas (or maybe not so much), he ran into his first love, Carrie, on a trip to Los Angeles. He courted her but when she came back to Salem, he had competition: his brother, Austin. Carrie and Austin were obviously in love, but when she learned he took over her company, she was fit to be tied. She ended up choosing Lucas, but only with a little push from Lexie (via Sami). After she found out she was pregnant, she and Lucas moved up the wedding. They tied the knot, but it wasn't long before she forgave Austin and the two of them started meeting behind Lucas and Sami's backs.
Lucas didn't discover the truth until after he believed his son Will had been abducted. He happened upon Carrie and Austin together on the roof. Already traumatized, he kicked Carrie out of his life.
Shortly thereafter, Lucas moved in with Sami. He thought he might want to hook back up with her, until he learned that she had been a bad, bad girl – again. The truth came out about her blackmailing Lexie to lie to Carrie. Austin, Carrie and Lucas all turned against Sami and Lucas and Will moved in with Kate. Will talked his parents into being civil for his sake and one has to believe it won't be too long before these lovebirds hook back up.
Though Sami had begun seeing EJ, Lucas couldn't stop thinking of her. Will encouraged Lucas and Sami to reconcile. Their relationship quickly heated up again, but Lucas was wary of her connection to EJ – especially when he offered Sami a partnership in Mythic. When they discovered EJ was working for Stefano DiMera, Lucas worried for her safety. Despite Lucas' protests, Sami was determined to help the police bust EJ for the black glove crimes.
Eager to be out of town when the police arrested EJ, Lucas and Sami left for a romantic ski weekend, but were caught in a blizzard. They made their way to an abandoned cabin in the woods. They finally made love, and began to talk about their future together. Suddenly, the roof of the cabin caved in and Lucas was trapped under the rubble. Sami was unable to free him alone, and ran to find help.
Sami flagged a passing car and was greeted with EJ, who was fleeing town after shooting John. EJ agreed to help save Lucas, but only if Sami slept with him. Desperate to save Lucas, Sami reluctantly complied, disgusted by EJ. When it was over, EJ rescued the unconscious Lucas, threatened Sami, and took off.
Lucas believed Sami when she claimed that she rescued him by herself, and he warned Kate not to interfere now that he and Sami were back together.
Lucas and Sami learned that Lexie and Tek were missing. Sami immediately thought EJ killed them. She confessed to Lucas that she was pregnant, hiding that there was a 50% chance the baby is EJ's. Sami asked Lucas to keep her pregnancy a secret.
Lucas and Sami showed up to tell their story for the TV docu-drama that Kate had secretly arranged. Sami was unable to lift the beam in the re-enactment. The next day, Sami called the TV network to remove the re-enactment footage and learned the show had been cancelled. Sami realized Kate set her up. Lucas later confronted his mother and defended Sami again.
Lucas was called into work by Victor, who insisted Lucas go to Canada and take Claire back from Shawn and Belle. Lucas refused and was fired. EJ, who had returned to town and was cleared of criminal charges, offered Lucas a job. Desperate, Lucas accepted, but set ground rules, determined that EJ would keep his distance from Sami. EJ agreed he would move out of the apartment building.
Lucas accidentally revealed to Kate that Sami was pregnant. He then confronted his mother about her attempts to undermine Sami. Lucas warned that if Kate kept it up, he would cut her out of his life for good.
Lucas proposed to Sami. She was reluctant at first, but Lucas managed to convince her. EJ arrived and learned of the engagement. He also suspected Sami was pregnant. Lucas warned Billie when she informed him that her dire financial situation was forcing her to go into business with EJ.
Kate told Lucas she thought Sami was with EJ the night John was shot. Lucas didn't buy it and disowned Kate.
Lucas and Sami continued their wedding planning, eager to make the entire ceremony and reception environmentally-friendly. Lucas was suspicious when EJ gave Lucas a month off, with pay, for the honeymoon. Lucas was unaware that EJ was blackmailing Sami, threatening to tell Lucas what happened between them unless Sami spied on the police department for him.
Lucas found a hysterical Sami at the church, where she told him she wants to leave Salem for good with him and Will. He begged Sami to tell him why she was so upset, but she refused. In an effort to reach out, Sami asked Lucas to invite Kate to the wedding.
Kate offered to throw Sami a bridal shower. Lucas distracted Sami so Kate could arrange the surprise bridal shower. Despite the show of "kindness," Kate continued to dig for evidence that Sami was up to something.
Unbeknownst to Lucas, Sami was plotting with Celeste to get rid of EJ once and for all. Sami promised EJ that she would leave Lucas and meet him so they could leave town together. Lucas planned a romantic night with Sami at a hotel, and Sami was forced to drug Lucas so she could carry out her plans to kill EJ. She couldn't do it, but the cabin was accidentally destroyed in a fire, and Sami believed EJ was dead.
Meanwhile, Kate tried to break into Lucas' hotel room with a fire axe. A porter stopped her and opened the door. Lucas stirred awake. Just when Kate was telling him Sami had left with EJ, a freshly showered Sami entered from the bathroom.
At Chez Rouge, Sami was in the ladies' room where she discovered EJ! Sami screamed and raced out into Lucas' arms. Lucas and Maggie found no trace of EJ. Sami fainted and was taken to the hospital. EJ showed up at Sami's hospital room and injected her IV with a syringe and told her she had two minutes to live. Sami screamed for help and Lucas rushed in, but she didn't die. Lucas wanted to know why EJ would want to kill Sami. Before she could confess, EJ arrived with flowers, acting as if he hadn't been there before.
Lucas tried to get him to leave the room. When EJ refused to go, Lucas left to get security. EJ promised Sami that her wedding would be a day to remember. Meanwhile, Kate paid a visit to Abe and snooped around his house. She found the photo of Sami and EJ in Lexie's car. Celeste arrived and caught her with the photo, but Kate snatched it back, determined to out Sami.
Kate arrived at the hospital with the photo, but EJ told her she couldn't ruin what he was planning for Sami and Lucas' wedding. She handed over the photo.
Sami prepared for her wedding. Sami continued to fret about marrying Lucas with secrets hanging over her head. Marlena convinces her to unburden herself to Lucas but when she tried, he stopped her. The wedding began, and when the priest asked if anyone objects, Sami spotted Kate and EJ at the back of the church.
EJ, however, didn't stop the wedding. Sami and Lucas were pronounced man and wife! Everyone headed to Chez Rouge, where Marlena presented a video of Sami and Lucas over the years. Stuck right in the middle was the photo of Sami and EJ. Sami sank to the ground, swearing her family did not know the whole story. Kate demanded Lucas leave since he knew Sami was a liar but he surprised everyone by asking Sami if she still wanted to be his wife. She said yes, he swept her up and carried her to the door where EJ was waiting. Sami got down and punched EJ!
Lucas took Sami home where he revealed that he knew all along that EJ helped her save his life in the cabin and he didn't care. Sami admitted that she had sex with EJ that night and the baby could be his. Lucas was on Sami's side and couldn't understand why she withheld the truth from him. Sami gave Lucas the option of leaving her if the baby was EJ's but he refused. For their honeymoon, Lucas and Sami worked to rebuild an old mansion in New Orleans. At the site, they discovered a metal box filled with letters written in Italian – with the DiMera signature. The foreman revealed they were in Maison Blanche.
Back in Salem, Lucas and Sami called on the help of their relatives to translate. The letters revealed clues about the origin of the ongoing feud between the Bradys and DiMeras. As Lucas and Sami got closer to the truth, they and their loved ones faced increasing threats from Stefano and Andre DiMera. Sami learned she was carrying twins and a DNA test showed that EJ was the father.
Stefano dictated that the only way to end the feud was if EJ and Sami married and raised their twins together, but Sami resisted. Later, it was revealed that the babies were Lucas' and that Kate paid to have the test results show the opposite. Desperate to have Sami for himself, EJ played up the danger she and her family would be in if she did not comply. Lucas refused to let Sami consider the idea of marrying EJ, but when John was killed by a hit-and-run driver, Lucas agreed to grant Sami a divorce.
Sami gave birth to the twins, and another DNA test stated that Lucas was the father of the girl and EJ was the father of the boy. After she recovered, EJ pushed her to marry.
At the small ceremony, EJ was shot just after he and Sami said their vows. Stefano demanded Sami stand by her new husband as he recovered in the hospital, and continued to threaten the Bradys if she did not do as he said. As the Salem police department sought the identity of the shooter, EJ learned he might not walk again. Distraught, he urged Sami to go back to Lucas. Sami, still afraid of Stefano's threats, stood by him. She convinced EJ that she truly cared for him and wanted him to get well for the sake of their son.
Lucas and Sami continued to be together as EJ laid in the hospital. He urged her to keep their family together and leave EJ. Lucas informed Sami that Will was ashamed by her marriage to EJ and left to go to Switzerland. When Sami still refused to leave EJ, Lucas made plans to seek full custody of his daughter.
At Belle and Shawn's wedding, Lucas introduced his daughter – Alice Caroline Horton. Lucas named her without consulting Sami. Later, Sami tried to seduce Lucas to prove she loved him, not EJ, but they were interrupted when EJ returned from the hospital and insisted on seeing his son.
Evidence that Lucas was behind EJ's shooting piled up, and he was arrested. Lucas made an attempt to flee with Kate's help, but Sami stopped him as he was about to cross the border. Lucas was sent back to prison to await trial. Stefano tried to have Lucas killed in his cell, but EJ found out about the plot and saved Lucas in time.
Later, Lucas learned that Sami and EJ were living together in a safe house with the twins after Stefano threatened them. Heartbroken, Lucas finally admitted his crime. After a tearful goodbye to Sami, he was sent off to state prison.
Lucas has refused Sami's phone calls and attempts to visit. He wants her to move on with his life, knowing he's got ten long years of jail time ahead of him. But in Salem, ten years can go by awfully fast, especially when top-notch attorney Mickey Horton is your uncle!
